The Electrifying World of Volcanic Lightning

Have you ever heard of volcanic lightning?  It does not happen in storm clouds in the sky, but rather in ash-rich volcanic plumes that are released by erupting volcanoes. Corrado Cimarelli and his team investigate this phenomenon at erupting volcanoes and have reproduced volcanic lighting in their lab, right here in Munich. Find out more about how they've done it, and what they've found out, at this event.

The Quest for a Second Earth

Earth-like worlds orbiting nearby stars are just being discovered by astronomers. Liquid water likely exists on their surface. Are these planets inhabited? What forms of life would they hold? How could this life be characterized? Could life signatures be remotely sensed by state-of-the-art astronomical instrumentation? Understanding our Earth’s history may help us to adopt the right strategy.
